Newtownards Road 2012

The Newtownards Road is at the heart of East Belfast and given that it has suffered from years of neglect, East Belfast Partnership identified the Newtownards Road as a key priority to address in its 2006- 2010 regeneration strategy.

The Partnership Board agreed to set up a Newtownards Road Project Management Team, to deliver a programme of work to regenerate the Newtownards Road by 2012.

Building on much previous work an Action Plan has recently been completed, with an emphasis on action being taken during the 2010-2012 period.  Projects include public realm enhancements such as new paving; environmental improvements to derelict sites; refurbishment of unused upper floors of shops and a shop frontage improvement scheme.  All of these initiatives will make a positive social, economic and environmental contribution and will ensure that the road becomes once again the backbone of a strong sustainable community where people want to live and work.
